According to the NKBA’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, the “demand for smarter storage” is a top priority. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets and pantries are among the specific features expected. Designer Denise Merbeth predicts that buffet cabinets — upper cabinets that extend down to the countertop — will have their moment this year. “I often use them in areas just outside the kitchen work zones. While they eliminate counter space, they use that easily accessible prime real estate for reachable storage,” explains Merbeth. Common uses include appliance garages and beverage centers, allowing items to be hidden behind doors when not in use.
More Color
A notable shift in NKBA trend reports over the past four years is an increase in color. Each survey, professionals rate different areas for incorporating color into the kitchen. In 2023, far fewer areas of the kitchen were considered appropriate for color; today, our ideas about where to use color are expanding. Stephanie Pierce of MasterBrand Cabinets explains that “what once seemed bold has evolved into a forward-thinking design decision rooted in richness and sophistication.” Earthy tones still dominate, but white and gray are losing ground to browns and off-whites. Even green is becoming a foundational shade in the space, with sage and muted greens increasingly replacing gray.
Colorful Appliances
Building on the momentum of the trend above, appliances are becoming a vehicle for color as personalization takes the lead in kitchen design. Chelsea Bothe of True Caliber notes that designers are embracing highly personalized kitchen elements, from statement appliances in vibrant shades to hardware choices that feel like jewelry. Colorful undercounter appliances such as refrigerators, beverage centers, and wine cabinets are especially popular, particularly in outdoor kitchens, bars, and entertainment spaces.
Curves
Chris Wilson of Newport Brass describes the return of curves, arches, and flowing silhouettes in faucets, lighting, furniture, and cabinetry. Curved profiles introduce movement and ease, complementing the linear aesthetic of the past decade. Wilson calls it “an expanded design vocabulary” offering more ways to build spaces with dimensionality and fluidity.
Natural Stone
Merbeth observes that homeowners are increasingly choosing natural stone for countertops, drawn to the visual variations and organic origins that give each piece a unique look and story. Quartzite is especially popular for its durability, heat resistance, and beauty. Full-height backsplashes, where the countertop material extends up the wall, are gaining popularity.
Warm Accents and Finishes
Wilson notes a renewed interest in warmer tones and color in the kitchen — richer woods, earthy neutrals, and brushed bronze or aged brass fixtures. Pierce cites nature as a strong design influence, noting that the red family is becoming more prominent alongside blues and greens. Earthy reddish accents — saffron and terracotta — are particularly trendy as accent colors.
Wood Grains
Merbeth sees a trend toward embracing wood texture and grain, perhaps because white painted kitchens have dominated for so long. White oak is especially popular in rift-sawn and quarter-sawn varieties with linear grain. Darker wood tones are also entering the market, with walnut being commonly used to achieve these warmer, richer looks.
Health and Safety Features
NKBA trends show a growing interest in features that improve quality of life in the kitchen — air quality, water quality, and acoustics are important design considerations. Ventilation hoods that quietly filter smoke, steam, and odors, as well as quiet dishwashers, are in high demand. Automatic detection of water or gas leaks and power outage alerts are sought-after features for refrigerators and ranges.
