Punch Cards Are the New Vision Boards: How to Make Your Own

If your social media feeds are filled with pretty, colorful punch cards packed with goals and creative patterns, you’re not alone in this discovery. This year, people are massively trading in traditional vision boards—often passive and quickly forgotten—for a trend that is far more interactive, rewarding, and effective: punch cards, or cartes à poinçonner. These little motivation cards, which resemble the loyalty cards you find at your favorite coffee shops, have gone viral on social media for one very specific reason: they turn the pursuit of our goals into a visual and deeply satisfying game that activates our reward system.

According to Emilia Marie, content creator and the creative mind behind this now-unmissable trend on Instagram and TikTok, the idea was born from a shared love of bingo cards and their playful format. “We loved the bingo card trend, but we really wanted something that focused on building lasting habits and rewarding consistency,” she explains enthusiastically. “We wanted to create a system that would let us reward ourselves for our consistency, not just for the sometimes-distant end result.” The concept quickly took off organically: Emilia hosted a friendly “punch party” to launch the idea with her friends over drinks, and the trend spread like wildfire across social media, with everyone sharing their own creations and interpretations of the concept.

The system works with childlike simplicity: each card clearly defines a specific goal and the number of times you want to accomplish it over a given period. Each time you complete the planned action, you punch or color in a circle on the card with a colored marker. The trick is to choose a cute little drawing as a thematic “punch”—a little book for a reading goal, a steaming cup for a homemade coffee goal, a dumbbell for working out—but a simple circle or star works just as well. For example, if you enjoy cooking and baking, you can challenge yourself to try 10 new recipes from your cookbook before allowing yourself to buy a new book. The cards can be as specific or as broad as you like, and you don’t have to create cards for the entire year all at once—start with one month, then adjust.

To make your own punch cards at home, nothing could be simpler or more affordable. Trace an existing loyalty card onto thick watercolor paper or lightweight cardstock, carefully cut it out with scissors or a paper trimmer, and use a fine-tip marker to draw circles at regular intervals. If pure artisanal DIY isn’t your cup of tea, you can also create your cards digitally on your computer and print them onto cardstock. The best part about this trend is that it also comes to life in a friendly community way: punch parties are the perfect opportunity to gather with friends over tasty snacks, refreshing drinks, and the collective creation of cards for the month ahead. There is no rigid “right way” to host a punch party, but the essential thing is to spend a convivial and creative moment that motivates you to reach your goals while strengthening the precious bonds with your loved ones.
