Among IKEA’s 2026 trends, a more serene option has emerged: Lagom Living. This natural, spa-inspired aesthetic is centered on wellbeing and calm. The look is rooted in the Swedish concept of “lagom,” which translates to “just the right amount.” Abbey Stark, IKEA’s interior design director, explains that lagom is fundamentally about balance — “not too much, not too little, just the right amount.” Sustainability, moderation, and practicality are at the heart of this philosophy.
Stark describes lagom as functional minimalism. IKEA embraces it “by creating harmonious, calm spaces, places where you can recharge and relax.” She mentions layered window treatments, shelves with only statement tableware, and thoughtfully placed plants as examples. “This style is curated by intention.” Lagom differs from Danish hygge, which emphasizes warmth, coziness, and togetherness through cozy textures and soft lighting. Lagom, by contrast, focuses on balance, moderation, and functionality.
To adopt the Lagom Living look, start with the color palette. Stark emphasizes that “soft, earthy colors” are essential, bringing serenity without visually overwhelming. Avoid stark whites and grays; opt for warm neutrals and nature-inspired hues: “creamy whites, sandy beiges, earthy browns, forest greens, and deep blues.” Natural materials are also fundamental — wood, stone, natural fabrics, rattan, raw metal, and greenery — promoting warmth, peace, and connection with nature.
Lagom Living strikes a balance between meaningful clutter and austerity. It goes beyond minimalism’s “less is more” mantra while rejecting excessive ornamentation and clutter. Under this aesthetic, “decor is useful, practical, and intentional; every piece has its purpose.” Decluttering is an essential first step — remove items that don’t bring joy or serve a real purpose, then be very selective about new additions. True joy and comfort can be found in restraint, in practicality, and in having “just the right amount.”
