Garden tasks for December: a guide

Gardening in December offers unique opportunities to improve your garden and prepare it for a vibrant spring. Here are some activities to consider for your garden this month, to lay the groundwork for a lush lawn next year.

Planning and ordering seeds

Reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year in gardening and decide which crops to grow next year. Whether you opt for tried-and-true favorites or experiment with new varieties, now is the ideal time to order your seeds. Choose plants that bloom in spring for a colorful start to the year.

Composting and managing fallen leaves

Check and turn your compost pile to ensure proper decomposition. Cover compost bins to protect them from rain and retain heat. Continue collecting fallen leaves for your leaf mold, adding to your existing pile or starting a new one if needed.

Harvesting winter crops

Inspect your vegetable garden for crops ready to be harvested. Vegetables such as leeks, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflowers may be ripe for picking. Don’t miss the harvest before the ground freezes.

Pruning

This is a good month to prune fruit trees, vines, and wisteria. Pruning now frees up time for more demanding tasks in spring.

Greenhouse maintenance

With most seedlings in the greenhouse, make sure it is well maintained. Remove snow from the roof to prevent glass damage, insulate outdoor taps and shut off the water supply to prevent freezing, and clean the greenhouse thoroughly to deter pests and diseases.

Lawn aeration

Aerate your lawn with a garden fork. This improves drainage and air circulation, promoting healthy grass growth.

Garden structures and fences

Inspect wooden garden structures and fences for damage or signs of rot. Applying preservative products can protect them from deterioration. Consider repairing or replacing weakened structures to withstand winter weather.

By following these tips, you’ll prepare your garden for a successful and abundant year ahead.
