If you’re eagerly awaiting the warmer weather to set up your patio, you’re not alone. Pinterest reported that “spring porch decor” saw a 4,000% increase in pins in February. This year, the major shift is toward patios designed as true extensions of indoor spaces, with comfortable furniture, indoor-inspired outdoor fabrics, and layered lighting.
The Patio as an Extension of the Home
Andrea Dussault, founder of Striped Lemon Design, explains that the biggest shift is that patios are no longer treated as mere “outdoor spaces” but as “true extensions of the home, fully livable and layered just like interiors.” Rather than just a grill and a few chairs, patios now feature comfortable seating, fire pits, wall-mounted televisions, rugs, lamps, and accessories. Homeowners want spaces that are as welcoming indoors as outdoors, enjoyable day and night.
Comfortable, Indoor-Inspired Furniture
As patios become extensions of the home, comfortable indoor-style furniture is gaining popularity. Dussault notes that “outdoor furniture mirrors interiors with deep seating, plush cushions, and relaxed proportions.” Using quality all-weather materials is essential for durability. Performance fabrics are “nearly impossible to distinguish from indoor upholstery” while resisting fading, moisture, mildew, and stains.
A Mix of Old and New
With the popularity of thrifting, secondhand patio furniture and vintage outdoor decor are trending. Nearly 79% of Americans use secondhand shopping to save money, and 54% seek out unique, original pieces. Mixing thrifted finds adds personality and character — starting with a quality statement piece and adding vintage accents.
Large Planters With Lush Arrangements
Patios are getting a verdant makeover with potted plants. Andersen notes that “the current look is all about abundance” and that even in minimalist homes, people are embracing “a slightly wild aesthetic.” There is a growing preference for large outdoor planters, which allow combining different plants in a single container.
Resort-Style Lounging
To feel like you’re on vacation every day, embrace resort-style lounging. Dussault says outdoor spaces “are adopting that relaxing resort feel” with comfortable, layered designs. She suggests incorporating lounge chairs, daybeds, and cabana-style seating to “instantly create a vacation vibe at home.”
Portable Table Lamps
Lighting is an easy and inexpensive way to enhance a patio. Dussault suggests replacing basic string lights with “lanterns, sconces, or rechargeable table lamps to create a warm, layered glow.” Portable lamps or layered lanterns can completely change the ambiance.
A Warm, Neutral Color Palette
Trending patio colors include “warm neutrals, sands, taupe, and olive green as base palettes with accents in brighter hues like blues and burgundy.” Changing color schemes doesn’t have to be complicated — “swapping out textiles, like performance pillows in earthy tones or subtle patterns, is an easy win.”
In 2026, the patio is becoming a true outdoor living room, extending the home into the garden and creating an additional living space where comfort meets style.
