IKEA says that color, pattern, and texture are the pillars of this maximalist aesthetic.
2026 is undoubtedly the year of color. Of course, neutral tones are still timeless and elegant, but as homeowners seek to create interiors that feel warm, personal, and joyful, color is undeniably part of the equation. If color excites you, the “joycore” trend might be the perfect choice for your home this year. Identified by IKEA in its 2026 Style Guide, this bold and playful decor style is shaping up to be the must-have trend, blending colors, patterns, and textures to create radiant rooms that evoke happiness.
So, what is joycore decor? We spoke with Abbey Stark, Director of Interior Design at IKEA, to learn more about this trend. Here is what you need to know to invite color into your home this year.
What Is Joycore?
IKEA’s 2026 Style Guide defines joycore as a decor style filled with color and multisensory stimulation. A maximalist’s dream, in a way.
“Joycore is a celebration of play through bold colors, fun textures, and unexpected elements in a room. Think colorblock patterns on rugs, animal-print cushions, and sofas with personality,” explains Stark.
The best aspect of joycore is that it is deeply personal and will look different in every space. With bursts of bright color as a constant, the way joy is experienced in interiors naturally varies. For example, for those with neutral spaces who want to invite more color this year, IKEA’s Style Guide assures us that white walls and neutral furniture can serve as the perfect foundation for this decorative trend. On the other hand, those who already embrace color may look to incorporate textures or playful, unexpected elements to bring more joy to their home.
Whatever you choose, joycore is about “adding elements into your home that evoke playful and happy emotions. It is deeply personal,” says Stark.
How to Embrace Joycore at Home
Embracing joycore at home couldn’t be simpler in theory, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. After years of hearing that neutral spaces and all-white are the only acceptable way to go, embracing joy through bold colors can sometimes feel challenging. The key is to stop overthinking. Joycore is about creating a space that feels personal and uplifting, not perfectly curated. Instead of asking yourself what is trendy or timeless, ask yourself what genuinely makes you smile. It is a decor trend where not taking yourself too seriously is the whole point, so allow yourself to let your inner child take the lead.
Naturally, color is the starting point. “Small touches of color can go a long way in your space – start with accent pieces, like a patterned throw for your sofa or a unique table lamp that adds character and charm,” suggests Stark.
Layering
If a full room redo feels too ambitious, start gently with layers. Stark suggests choosing two primary colors as a base and introducing a third as an accent to create balance. These hues can be complementary – positioned opposite each other on the color wheel – for an energetic, high-contrast look. Or go for analogous hues, which sit next to each other on the wheel, for a softer, more harmonious effect. The palette you choose will set the emotional tone of the room, whether dynamic and lively or calm with a touch of whimsy.
For a current take on this trend, Stark recommends considering pieces in IKEA’s 2026 color of the year, rebel pink.
“Rebel pink is bold, full of energy – and most importantly, when it comes to the joycore trend – playful! It evokes joy in unexpected places – take our new GREJSIMOJS chair cover, for example. It is fuzzy, pink, and gives any space a wow effect,” she says.
Texture and Shape
Of course, joycore is not just about color. Texture and shape are just as important in creating a space that sparks joy. Look for tactile materials – fuzzy, plush, glossy, mirrored – that catch the eye and feel playful. Sculptural silhouettes and unexpected shapes can turn everyday objects into conversation pieces. Lighting and small decorative accessories are particularly easy ways to experiment: think curvilinear lamps, wavy photo frames, quirky vases, or baskets with exaggerated proportions.
Above all, joycore works best when it reflects you. Mix bold colors with neutral bases for balance. Display sentimental objects alongside modern finds. Pair a whimsical lamp with a traditional sofa, or style an elegant console with brightly colored ceramics.
The magic happens in the contrast. When thoughtfully layered, these elements create an interior that feels collected, expressive, and, most importantly: joyful.
